Lady of the Sea
This picture is
based on a story I heard from my mother-in-law’s mother, Mildred
Whitman of Mekoryuk, Alaska, who is in her late 90’s and now living
in Anchorage, under care at the Providence.
She is still very sharp, and only speaks Cup’ig.
When Mildred
was a little girl on Nunivak Island, she saw a woman fixing her hair
on the rocks near the beach, and could not distinguish who the lady
was. Mildred went up closer to find out who she was, but did not
recognize her. The lady
looked at her and jumped into the water, but before the lady
completely submerged herself into the water, Mildred saw that she
did not have feet, but seal flippers.
The lady submerged, and never came back out.
The other
stories I heard about it is when the shaman would beseech her to
release some of the animals and fish so that the village(s) would
have the means to survive.
