Fishing in the winter through the ice provides subsistence sustenance to the Yup'ik of the Yukon-Kuskokwim delta. This practice has helped many who otherwise cannot afford many of the modern staples purchased through the stores. Young and old continue to practice this method of survival in the cold winter months.
