MEKORYUK PHOTOGRAPHS Featuring the daily life of the Island folk, rich in culture, a beautiful island separated from the mainland in the Bering Sea. One-half of Nunivak Island is designated a Wilderness Area. There are approximately 4,000 reindeer (2003 count), and about 550 musk-oxen, with no predators. There are only 198 people in the village of Mekoryuk. The island is pristine, free from the tangles of big cities. It is not cluttered with people or traffic. The island is 45 miles wide by 65 miles long. This page features photographic events and subsistence based activities on the island.
