Northern Lights v.14 Order

11"x14" Shadow Box Frame & Matt

Northern Lights is made with carved Mekoryuk driftwood, acrylics and guinea hen feathers.  It has been one of the past favorites, and this is the first time I've done this horizontally.  The past works had each of them above one another vertically.

The Alaska Natives have many stories to explain these northern lights. While the northern lights dance in the night sky, parents would tell their children that they will grab them if they stayed out, as a means to have them return home. Another story is that when the color turns red, that means there will be war somewhere or the northern lights, other stories had them play “kick the ball” with a human head or walrus skull.

The whistling crackling noise which sometimes accompanied the aurora is the voices of these spirits trying to communicate with the people of the Earth. They should always be answered in a whispering voice. The heavenly spirits were called "sky-dwellers," those who live in the sky.
